How will we handle overpopulation ?

Do you think that if are society every got to the point where are resources became extremely limited because of overpopulation would are government put a limit on childbirth like in china or make it so only certain individuals could have kids? I was just wondering because the human race is no doubtingly growing and people are living longer than they had in the past. I believe that if we don't all kill each other off first, and no asteroid destroys us, and by some miracle global warming doesn't put an end to the race of man, I would speculate that overpopulation would get us. We already consume more than we need and people are readily using up the resources that are needed to sustain human activity. Most people would agree that it would be wonderful if we could some how get everyone out of poverty, get rid of all the diseases that are out there, and have everyone live a full life, but if we all lived and contained to live long lives and procreated would that just lead to the death of man.
