Why did John the baptist call Jesus "The Lamb of God"?

abel offered a spotless lamb to God, and his blood was shed for it. the blood of the lamb saved israel from the death angel in egypt. Jesus was born among sheep and cattle. it is fitting since He frees people from their sins by washing them in His blood.
